competing, in Mainein MaineBy Scott Harpersharper@gtowntimes.comGeorgetown will be represented this weekend at the Belfast, Maine, Wooden Boat Show in hopes of getting to the national competition next year.Willie French known locally as the ""Michael Jordan of boat building"" and his partner Alex Poole, along with their families, will be in Maine Saturday as they compete against a dozen other teams who are also hoping to advance in the competition.French and Poole a local cabinet maker were the champion builders at the annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show which celebrates its 18th year in October in both 2000 and 2001. SEE MAINE, Page 4AThey also had the fastest time at one hour, 11 1/2 minutes. After they were able to build a useable boat at such speed, the plans for the boats that were built in the following years were changed.""They had to change the plans because it got too easy,"" French said with a laugh. The plans that have been used in recent years at Georgetown's Boat Show were created by Carruthers B. Coleman of Kentucky.French has spent the past two years as a judge in the local competition so he and Poole have been very busy the past couple of weeks building practice boats in an effort to shave precious minutes off their times. There will be one major difference that will be noticed by French and Poole while they are in Maine this weekend. The water temperature along the Grand Strand Tuesday was 82 degrees. In Belfast, the temperature of the water is in the low 50s, French said.""That is quite chilly,"" French said. The location for next year's national competition has not been announced. Local organizers are making a big push to hold the contest in Georgetown.Susan Hibbs, one of the Wooden Boat Show organizers, said having the nationwide finals here would be a big boost for the area. ""I am looking forward to representing Georgetown,"" French said about this weekend's contest. ""This will help promote Belfast and our own boat show.""
