Records fell at Saturday's 18th annual Wooden Boat Show in Georgetown. The boat-building team of Keith Singleton of Daniel Island and Doug Dow of James Island set a new world record for speed and craftsmanship in building the 12-foot Georgetown skiff with a time of 2 hours 27 minutes and 33 seconds. The world record is based on time of building the boat and quality of workmanship. They were presented the ""Golden Calk Gun Award"" at the banquet following the boat show. To win the Wooden Boat Challenge, however, contestants have to race their rowboats across the Sampit River. That opened the door for Bill Hussey of Charleston and Eric Peabody of Mount Pleasant to win first place and the $500 prize. Hussey and Peabody placed third in time (2:39:14 ), second in workmanship and first in rowing. Taking second and the $300 prize was the father-son team of Willie and James Murphy of Goose Creek. They placed fifth in time (3:32:38), first in workmanship, third in rowing.Singleton and Dow took third place overall and the $200 prize, placing second in time, third in workmanship, fourth in rowing. The banquet's master of ceremonies John Benson said this year's Wooden Boat Show produced a record number of sponsors, 182, and the show had 100 exhibitors. It certainly produced its most-ever contestants from Milwaukee, Wisc. Kathleen and Chad Langville of Milwaukee formed a mother-son team; Amy Langville of Milwaukee and Bobby Boyd of Raleigh, N.C., for another and SEE RECORD, Page 2B Matthew Jackson of Raleigh and Sarah Jackson of Milwaukee formed a third. Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day for the boat show with bright skies and mild winds.
